Leddregisteret driver fortløpende innsamling av data fra hele Norge om leddproteser, hoftebrudd og korsbåndsskader

Nasjonalt Register for Leddproteser  startet å registrere innsetting av hofteleddsproteser i 1987. Registreringen ble utvidet til å omfatte innsetting av alle typer leddproteser i 1994, og nå omfatter registreringen også korsbåndsskader (2004) og brudd i hoften (2005)

Årsak til at registrene ble startet var ønsket om å gi pasienter best mulig behandling. Registrene gir en unik mulighet til å studere forskjeller i resultat mellom protesemerker og operasjonsmetoder, og på den måten sikre at produkter og prosedyrer med dårlig resultat ikke brukes.

Registeret produserer forskningsrapporter av høy kvalitet, og i 2002 ble Nasjonalt Register for Leddproteser utnevnt til kompetansesenter av Helsedepartementet.

Alle registrene eies av Norsk ortopedisk forening, mens driften er tillagt Ortopedisk klinikk, Haukeland Universitetssjukehus. Driften av leddregisteret, hoftebruddregisteret og korsbåndsregisteret finansieres av Helse Vest RHF og Helse-Bergen HF.
